If you are looking for a new dentist, there are a lot of ways to do that. Only half of Americans visit the dentist twice a year as recommended. If you are new to an area or just need a new family dentist for other reasons, here are some tips to help you get the right one.
1. Talk to your friends and family. The single best way to locate decent goods and services is to get a recommendation from a person you trust. You have to know people in your area who use a good family dentist. If you have kids, you should talk to the people you know with kids about where they go and where they take their children. Do you want to go to a special pediatric dental office?
2. Talk to your primary care doctor. If you have a good relationship with a primary care physician, they can be a great resource for finding a host of other health services and professionals. One of those professionals they can help you find is a family dentist. If they do not know, talk to the staff in the office about what they have heard about family dentists in your area. At the very least, they can give you some names you can look into.
3. Look online. Many cities and towns have Facebook pages and groups that they have set up to promote local businesses. If you do not see any posts about local, family dentists or cosmetic dentists, you should ask the question. Another two sites that are great for this are Yelp and Angie’s List. Look to Google. Add local terms to your searches. If you are in the Buffalo area, for instance, look for “Buffalo family dentistry” rather than just “family dentistry” in your searches. Doing these searches and looking in these places can give you reviews but you should be careful. If you see a lot of negative comments that are posted anonymously, you should take them with a grain of salt. People are much more likely to complain than compliment so keep that in mind when you look at the reviews.
4. Talk to your insurance carrier. If you have dental insurance, you probably have to go to a family dentist who is in your network so that is the first thing you should ask them is for names for this. They may also have more information about the dentists who are in the network. Do you need dental implants? It may not be covered by your insurance but millions of people have them and not every dentist handles them. Do you have children? Not all family dentists can treat kids. They have a lot of information that can be very helpful when you are looking for a new family dentist.
There are some questions you should ask prospective dentists:
- Are you a member of the American Dental Association? What about the state dental association. This can show that the dental office is a bit more professional than those who forgo this membership.
- Where is the office? How do you get there? Is there parking? Is there public transportation?
- What are your office hours? Do you have any office hours at night or on the weekend? Some family dentists do offer hours at these times to helping working people and families.
- Do you have any specials for new patients? Many dentists will try to get people in the door by offering specials for new patients but they may not just announce that to every caller. Even if you look on the website and do not see one, it is always worth asking the question. They cannot say yes if you do not ask.
- What is their policy for people who are afraid? There are a great many people who are scared to go to the dentist and all dental offices understand this. They will work with patients who have had a bad experience because it is important to get people back into the habit of going to the dentist.
Americans are known around the planet for caring about how our teeth look. The best way to keep teeth looking and feeling great is to find a good dentist.
